Audience Theory

Audience theories suggest that representations are open to different interpretations and that their meanings are not fixed.

HYPODERMIC NEEDLE MODEL

USES AND GRATIFICATIONS THEORY

RECEPTION THEORY

In relation to our film, we want and believe that our film will have a Christian dominant reading beause of religous values being the theme and title of  redemption. The character who has done wrong in the film, my character 'Jake', as he has bullied his step-brother which has consequently led to him taking his life, tries to avenge his brothers death by getting revenge on those who bullied him and ultimately seek redemption. As he is also to blame, the dilema he is left with is whether or not he should kill himself. With a dominant reading the audience will not have sympathy for Jake as he is partly to blame for his brother's death as he was a bully. The audience will feel sympathetic towards Stuart as he was innocent and bullied unfairly and ended up commiting suicide.

However, there could be other readings such as a negotiated reading or an oppositional reading to our film by the audience. Another reading may be that the audience feel sympathy for Jake as him being a bully may have been justified for certain reasons.

Dead Mans Shoes Trailer

Dead mans shoes - Trailer - Directed by Shane Meadows - Crime, Drama, Thriller.

Powerpoint, including examples

Our task for A2 is to, in a team, create either a short film or teaser trailer in a genre of our choice. Our team, consisting of me (Jamie), Josh, Lela and Chloe. We have decided to use hybrid genre of both thriller and drama. This is why we have created this powerpoint below that talks about the codes and conventions of a drama and thriller genre. Also, below, there are examples of existing films that have this hybrid genre that we are going for in our film. By looking at existing films with a thriller/drama genre it helps us to become inspired and possibly use some of the asepcts of these films in our own such as similar narratives, iconography, locations and type of characters.

Although we had planned for our film to be a hybrid genre of drama and thriller, when watching the completed film and looking at the themes that are shown in our film we can say that the genre is BRITISH social realism.

Social realism is a genre that focuses on topical issues alive in modern society which are represented by different ideologies. Themes such as; drugs, money, abuse, and sex. Our film focuses on issues that are considered an aspect of British Social Realism such as bullying, suicide, violence and working class characters.
